A sauna controller reading differs from a thermometer: what to record

If a sauna controller and a separate thermometer show different numbers, first record what each number represents and where it was measured. Do not move the installed sensor or adjust its calibration to make the displays match. A clear paired-reading log gives support something useful to assess without changing the system under investigation.

Check that you are comparing measured values

On Fenix, current temperature is the sensor value and selected temperature is the target. Photograph the screen with its labels visible rather than copying a number without context. A target beside a thermometer reading is not a comparison between two measurements. Confirm the displayed units as part of the record. [1]

Describe the instruments and their locations

Write the controller model and the separate thermometer’s make or identifier. Record where the separate thermometer already sits: wall, bench or other location; approximate height; and its position relative to the heater, door and vents. Photograph both locations when the room is cool. Do not stand close to hot equipment merely to improve a photograph.

Keep the installed sensor where it is

The Fenix installation instructions require the heater sensor to be located so incoming air does not affect it. That is a reason for the installer to assess the specified position, not an owner invitation to relocate it or block a vent. Leave the sensor, covers and ventilation arrangement untouched while you gather observations. [2]

Use one line per paired observation

Date and time; stage of operation; controller current reading and units; controller target; separate thermometer reading and units; door recently opened or not; any recent change to the room; error message if present. Read both instruments as close together in time as practical and record if they were not simultaneous.

Keep an ordinary-operation record rather than extending heating to collect more data. Do not choose a higher target solely to exaggerate a difference. If the sauna feels wrong or a fault message appears, end the observation and seek help instead of trying to complete a neat spreadsheet.

A hypothetical record that avoids a false diagnosis

An owner photographs the Fenix target field but writes it in the log as “measured temperature”. At the next observation they identify the current-temperature field and correct the label, retaining the original photo. That correction alone makes the report more useful. It does not establish that either instrument is accurate or that a remaining difference is acceptable.

What to ask support

Send the model details, location photographs and a small set of clearly labelled observations. Ask whether the display is being interpreted correctly, whether the separate thermometer is suitable for the comparison, and whether an installer should check the sensor position. Request the allowable assessment method for your equipment rather than looking for a universal acceptable difference. Do not change installer calibration settings before the enquiry is answered.

Your practical checklist

  • Label current and target readings separately.
  • Include units beside every recorded value.
  • Photograph both measurement locations when cool.
  • Note door opening and the operating stage.
  • Leave sensors and calibration unchanged pending assessment.

Is a difference proof that the controller is faulty?

The record alone does not establish that. First exclude a target-versus-current comparison and provide the locations and operating context.

Should I place the second thermometer beside the installed sensor?

Do not reposition equipment near a hot heater to improvise a test. Ask support for an appropriate comparison method for the exact installation.
