Why we started.

Swell was founded in Western Australia, inspired by the coastline, climate and outdoor lifestyle that shape how people live here. We wanted recovery equipment that did not feel like gym equipment dropped into a backyard. It had to be premium, practical and good enough to sit beside a pool, deck or architectural outdoor space.

At the time, the market was full of products that either looked good but felt flimsy, or performed well but looked out of place at home. Swell was built to close that gap.

Our focus is simple: outdoor traditional saunas, ice baths and recovery products that feel considered from the first look to the first session. Strong materials. Clean design. Real-world durability. No shortcuts.

The goal is not just recovery. It is making recovery part of everyday life at home.

Materials matter

Built from better timbers, not cheap shortcuts.

A sauna gets hot, then cools, then gets hot again. That means the timber, roof, glass, fasteners and finishes matter. We choose materials for heat, comfort, outdoor durability and a clean sauna experience.

Canadian cedar timber

The ECO 4 and Retreat 4 both use clear grade Western Red Canadian Cedar. It is the timber the sauna world gets most excited about — and for good reason. It looks premium, smells incredible, has the best reputation, and clear grade cedar means you will rarely find knots.

Japanese cedar on Cube 2

Our Cube 2 uses solid 38mm Japanese cedar. It is the new kid on the block: a hot, innovative sauna timber that we think more people will be using over the next few years. It has a beautiful premium look, a softer aroma than Canadian red cedar, and visually we think it can debatably look even better.

No toxic sauna feel

We avoid the cheap, chemical-heavy feel you get from low-grade cabins. Our focus is natural sauna timbers, clean heat and materials selected for repeated use in hot environments.

When people research what timber to buy for a sauna, Western Red Canadian Cedar gets the most hype — and it deserves it. It is the timber the industry points to because it has the best reputation, a beautiful natural look and that unmistakable Western Red Cedar sauna aroma.

The ECO 4 and Retreat 4 use the same clear grade Western Red Canadian Cedar build. You will rarely find knots, and we tend to match the colours so the finish feels considered and premium. Sometimes cedar will show lighter tones, sometimes deeper tones, but either way it is a beautiful timber with natural character.

It is durable, proven and harvested from Canadian forests with sustainability in mind. You only need to do a little research to see why Western Red Cedar is considered the gold standard for sauna timber.

This is the Japanese cedar used on our Cube 2. It is the new kid on the block — a hot, innovative sauna timber that feels like a genuine game changer for compact outdoor saunas. It has a softer aroma than Canadian red cedar, while still giving that warm, natural, premium sauna feel.

Red cedar is what the sauna industry usually points to — and you cannot really beat it. But Japanese cedar is honestly just as good, and visually we think it can debatably look even better. Over the next few years, we expect more sauna brands to start paying attention to it. On the Cube 2, the solid 38mm Japanese cedar gives a compact two-person sauna a strong, clean and premium presence.

Why cedar?

Cedar is one of the most respected sauna timbers because it is naturally beautiful, comfortable against skin and well suited to heat cycles. It gives the sauna a warm, premium smell and feel without making the space feel heavy or artificial.

Western Red Canadian Cedar

Western Red Canadian Cedar is the gold-standard sauna timber. It has the biggest reputation, the most hype, a beautiful premium look and the classic cedar smell people expect when they step into a quality sauna. The Swell ECO 4 and Retreat 4 both use the same clear grade Western Red Canadian Cedar build, so knots are rare, and we colour-match the timber where possible for a cleaner, more premium finish. Natural variation is part of the beauty: sometimes you will see lighter tones, sometimes darker tones, but overall it is an exceptional, durable timber harvested from Canadian forests with sustainability in mind.

No glues, no toxic shortcuts

Inside the sauna cabin, we prioritise natural timber and a clean sauna environment over cheap glued panels, synthetic veneers or harsh chemical-heavy finishes. The aim is simple: when the sauna heats up, it should feel clean, natural and premium.

Weatherproof outdoor roofing

Outdoor saunas need proper weather protection. Our ECO 4 uses weatherproof UV-resistant bitumen shingles and a large overhanging roof, helping protect the sauna from Australian sun and rain. That is a big reason the ECO 4 is one of our strongest outdoor weatherproof options.

Glass, hardware and outdoor durability

A premium outdoor sauna is more than timber. Glass, hinges, roofing, seals, fasteners and the base all matter. Swell designs around Australian outdoor use: heat, UV, rain, poolside placement, coastal air and real family use.
