Adding a sauna during a whole-home electrical upgrade
Add the sauna to the whole-home electrical brief before individual appliance decisions become separate installations. One coordinated equipment schedule helps the electrical contractor assess the project without relying on an incomplete collection of quotes.

Create a whole-home equipment schedule
Use a row for the sauna and each other major proposed change: vehicle charging, cooking, hot water, heating or cooling, and any generation or storage project. Record the selected model if known, document source, decision status, purchase commitment and person responsible. Include existing equipment that the contractor asks you to identify. Do not invent ratings to fill empty cells.
Keep “future possibility” separate from “ordered for this stage”. Ask the contractor how uncertainty should be handled rather than presenting every imagined future appliance as a confirmed installation. The schedule is an information register, not a demand calculation. Do not sum advertised outputs and treat the result as a design requirement.
Make the sauna package a controlled decision
Attach the final heater and controller details to the sauna row. Identify who is responsible for obtaining manuals and confirming the supplied combination. If you are still choosing a package, give the contractor the alternatives and a decision date rather than quietly switching products after the electrical quote is accepted.
In Victoria, electrical installation work must be arranged through a registered electrical contractor. [1] Use the appropriate local professional to assess the complete brief. A whole-home project does not make sauna-specific equipment instructions optional, and this planning sheet does not establish which supply arrangement or upgrades the home needs.
Coordinate stages and access
Build a programme with decision points rather than invented durations: equipment selection; assessment complete; scope accepted; routes coordinated; installation prerequisites met; completion records received. Ask the contractor which decisions must happen before walls, paths or landscaped areas are finished. Record who gives the next trade permission to proceed with its own scope.
Ask whether proposed future work can be planned now and what the present quote actually includes. Keep an explicit boundary between current installation, optional preparation and work deferred entirely. This avoids a later assumption that a future sauna connection was covered merely because it appeared in a conversation about the renovation.
A useful change meeting agenda
Imagine the household has chosen cooking and hot-water equipment, but the sauna and vehicle charger are still undecided. At the coordination meeting, walk through those two open rows first. Ask what can be assessed provisionally, what needs a final model and whether any upcoming construction decision should wait. Record the answer with an owner and next action.
Finish by issuing a revised schedule to the electrical contractor, builder and other affected project contacts. Ask each recipient to flag any conflict with their accepted scope. Save the previous version rather than overwriting the decision history. When quotes change, link the change to the schedule revision so the owner can see what has actually been added or removed.
Your practical checklist
- List current, ordered and future equipment separately.
- Attach sauna heater and control documentation.
- Keep technical assessment with the electrical contractor.
- Agree dependencies before closing construction work.
- Circulate approved changes to all affected trades.
Should I buy the sauna before the electrical project is assessed?
Have the contractor review the proposed package and site while decisions are still open. This guide does not determine your purchase terms or guarantee that any particular package will suit.
Can I reserve capacity by writing “future sauna” on the plan?
That note starts a discussion; it does not establish a design. Ask the contractor what information is required and what, if anything, is included in the accepted scope.
