Can you let outdoor sauna timber weather naturally?
A weathered timber appearance can be a design preference, but it is not a maintenance plan. Decide how you want the cabin to look, then check whether the supplied construction and finish allow that approach. For Cube 2, the supplied manual calls for exterior timber protection rather than a leave-it-alone strategy. [1]

Write the appearance brief first
Choose what matters visually: keeping the delivered colour, accepting a changing surface appearance or matching an existing garden palette. Collect reference photographs as style examples, then ask the supplier which approved finish route can achieve the closest result. A photograph of another timber building is a useful mood reference, not a care instruction.
The Cube 2 manual states that outdoor timber will weather and that sun, rain, wind and seasonal humidity can change colour and surface texture. Expecting visual change therefore belongs in the design conversation from the beginning. [1]
Check the finish route against the supplied cabin
The same manual says natural timber exposed to Australian sun should be protected with suitable exterior timber oil, and directs owners to reapply according to exposure and the oil manufacturer’s instructions. For this model, simply skipping exterior care to pursue a grey appearance is not the documented route. [1]
Ask the supplier to set out the permitted choices for your ordered finish. The useful answer identifies the product or system, the exterior faces covered, preparation requirements and future inspection needs. Keep a written alternative if the supplier approves something different for your particular cabin.
Compare three ownership choices
Choice one is to maintain the approved finish and accept the routine it requires. Choice two is to request an alternative appearance within a supplier-approved finish system. Choice three is to change the placement or garden design so the cabin remains visually comfortable as its appearance changes.
For each choice, write down who will carry out the work, how they will reach the back and sides, and what access must remain clear. Include the cost of access and preparation when obtaining quotes; the price of a bottle of oil is only one part of a maintenance job.
A practical garden example
Imagine a cabin placed beside a weathered fence. Rather than abandoning the cabin’s exterior care to make the colours match, ask for photographs of approved finishes and compare them beside the actual fence. You might prefer to keep the sauna warmer in colour and use planting to connect the two surfaces.
Mark the rear inspection route on the garden plan before planting. Keep enough working space for the owner or contractor to inspect the exterior as agreed with the supplier. This turns the appearance choice into a layout decision as well as a colour decision.
Keep patina records separate from condition records
Use one set of photographs to follow colour and another set to record joint condition, persistent damp areas or damage. Do not use satisfaction with the colour as a reason to ignore a changed joint. Cube 2 instructions call for inspecting external silicone when it splits, lifts, shrinks or pulls away. [1]
At the next review, compare the cabin with your original appearance brief. If you still like the changing look, continue the approved care route. If not, ask about a compatible finish change before adding a new product.
Your practical checklist
- Describe the appearance you want in words and photographs.
- Obtain the permitted finish options for the actual cabin.
- Budget access, preparation and application, not just materials.
- Track appearance and weather-joint condition separately.
Does a weathered look mean I can stop exterior maintenance?
Not for the Cube 2 instructions, which call for exterior timber protection and ongoing inspection. [1]
Can I ask for a different finished appearance?
Yes. Ask for an approved finish option and a written care schedule for that option before making the change.
