Sauna standby power and controller consumption: what to ask

Ask what remains powered when heating is off before assigning a standby figure. Separate the controller, connectivity, lights and heating states instead of assuming one universal wattage.

Define the state being measured

Write a plain description such as ‘heating disabled, controller connected, lighting off, no delayed start active’. Ask the supplier which state is normal for your exact package and what equipment remains energised. Do not assume that a dark display means zero consumption, or that an enabled display means the elements are heating.

Request any published standby figure with its test conditions, model identifier, included accessories and measurement method. Ask whether a quoted number includes external controls or only the heater. If no relevant figure exists, record it as unknown rather than borrowing a wattage from a different controller.

Agree a non-invasive measurement plan

Ask an electrician whether existing installed monitoring can resolve the small consumption you want to measure and whether the boundary excludes other loads. Do not fit improvised meters to hardwired equipment or open the switchboard. Energy Safe Victoria specifically directs installation work to a registered electrical contractor. [1]

A short period may produce little visible movement on a coarse display. Ask about resolution and data logging before treating a rounded zero as a verified zero. Any observation period must preserve the supplier’s normal safety and shutdown requirements; do not leave a system in an inappropriate state merely to obtain a longer sample.

Convert a hypothetical observation carefully

Imagine suitable dedicated monitoring records 2.4 kWh over 20 complete days in one documented non-heating state. Dividing by 480 hours gives 0.005 kW, or 5 W average. If that exact average persisted for a hypothetical 8,760-hour year, energy would be 43.8 kWh. These figures are arithmetic examples, not a claimed standby draw for a Swell product.

Energy accumulated over time is expressed in kWh, as the Australian Government explains. [2] Do not annualise a mixed sample containing heating, lighting or communications changes as though it were pure standby. If different states occur, measure and label them separately or report the result as mixed-state consumption.

Decide whether the answer changes your budget

Use the measured or documented figure in a separate ownership-budget row. Keep it out of a per-cycle figure if it has already been included by the same meter. Conversely, do not describe a heater-only measurement as the complete system total if the controller has a separate supply.

Before changing shutdown habits, ask the supplier which off or isolation procedure is intended for normal use and longer absences. Do not defeat safety features, disconnect protective equipment or install an unapproved timer to chase a small estimated saving. The practical endpoint may be a clear, modest budget allowance and better documentation rather than a change to the installation.

Your practical checklist

  • Name the exact non-heating state and included equipment.
  • Request model-specific test conditions, not a generic wattage.
  • Confirm monitoring resolution before interpreting zero.
  • Avoid double-counting standby in cycle totals.

Can I assume standby is zero if heating is off?

No. Obtain model-specific evidence or an appropriate measurement. Heating state and total installation consumption are different questions.

Should I disconnect the controller every time?

Follow the supplied normal shutdown instructions. Ask the supplier before changing the routine; this worksheet does not prescribe isolation or approve additional switching.
