Storing sauna components before assembly

If assembly will not follow delivery immediately, agree a temporary storage arrangement before dispatch. The useful deliverable is a supplier-approved storage brief for the actual packages, not a universal instruction to put a tarp over them.

Describe the delay and the available space

Send the supplier a photograph and description of the proposed storage location. State whether it is enclosed or exposed, whether other work is happening nearby and when you expect the assembler to attend. Describe access restrictions and any uncertainty in the programme. Ask whether the proposed arrangement is suitable for the packed goods and what to do if the assembly date moves.

Do not confuse a completed outdoor cabin with components awaiting assembly. Swell identifies the Cube 2 timber as solid Japanese cedar, but that seller specification does not establish a storage method for every loose part, package or electrical item. [1] Keep the storage questions tied to the delivered condition and current supplier instructions rather than timber reputation.

Send a five-part storage question sheet

Cover: ask what shelter is required and whether the transport packaging may remain in place. Support: ask how each package should be supported and whether stacking is permitted. Moisture: ask what inspection or response is needed if packaging becomes wet. Handling: ask which items need specialist handling or a particular orientation. Time: ask whether a maximum storage interval or review point applies to this order.

Add a column for the supplier’s answer, the instruction document and the person implementing it. Do not turn an unanswered question into your own rule about ventilation, wrapping, drying, coatings or weights. If the supplier provides separate instructions for timber, glass and equipment, keep those distinctions in the brief rather than reducing everything to one storage sentence.

Nominate a storage custodian

Choose who will check that the agreed area remains available and that other trades do not move or cover the goods without discussion. Record where each package is kept and who can authorise movement. Keep the route to doors and normal household access part of that conversation. A storage plan that relies on a garage bay is incomplete if another contractor is booked to use it.

Keep a simple condition log: date, observer, package identifier, visible change, photograph and action requested. This is a record of observations, not a timber moisture assessment. If water, impact or packaging damage is noticed, ask the supplier for the appropriate next step; do not improvise heat drying or apply a finish to hide the concern.

Replan when the assembly date changes

Imagine a base contractor postpones completion after the sauna has arrived. Send the updated programme and storage photographs to the supplier, and request confirmation that the current arrangement can continue. If not, compare the practical alternatives with the supplier and handling contractor: a different suitable space, arranged storage or a revised delivery plan if dispatch has not occurred.

Record any agreed charges, access needs and responsibility for moving the packages before accepting the alternative. The output should be a revised storage brief with a named custodian and next review point. It should not be a guessed number of safe days outdoors or an assurance that packaging makes the delay harmless.

Your practical checklist

  • Describe the actual storage location before delivery.
  • Get written answers on cover, support, moisture, handling and timing.
  • Allocate a custodian and package locations.
  • Keep a dated condition log without opening unsafe packages.
  • Reconfirm the arrangement whenever the programme changes.

Does Japanese cedar mean loose components can be left outside?

The material name alone does not answer that question. Obtain the supplier’s instructions for the packed and unpacked components in your order.

Should I unwrap wet packaging to help it dry?

Ask the supplier for instructions specific to the affected contents. This guide does not prescribe opening, drying or rewrapping methods.
