Understanding sauna timber sourcing claims
A useful sauna timber sourcing enquiry separates the timber description from its origin and any certification claim. Ask for evidence tied to the actual cabin and components you intend to buy. A familiar timber name or an attractive forest photograph should not have to carry every answer.

Start with a component schedule
Make separate rows for the main walls, benches, backrests, floor and exterior trim. Against each row, ask for the timber name, construction description and finish or treatment information. Leave unanswered fields blank rather than copying a statement about the walls into every component.
For example, the current Swell Cube 2 template specifies solid 38 mm Japanese cedar. That is a seller specification about material and thickness, not a forest certification or an emissions test. Use the exact Japanese cedar identity when making the comparison; do not substitute evidence about a differently named cedar. [1]
Ask separate questions about origin
Create distinct fields for species identity, country of harvest and country of manufacture or assembly. Ask the supplier to state what each answer refers to and which document supports it. Avoid treating a species name as the answer to where this particular timber was harvested.
Add the product model, quotation date and, when available, batch reference to the enquiry. If a supplier says a source can change, ask which information will be confirmed before dispatch. A sourcing file should describe the product being ordered, not just a previous display cabin or a generic catalogue range.
Understand what chain of custody evidence addresses
FSC describes chain of custody certification as verification that forest-based materials meeting its standards are credibly used along the path from forest to finished goods. It says an FSC label on a finished product signals that its chain of custody requirements have been met through the supply chain. This explains that particular scheme; it does not establish that any Swell product is certified. [2]
If a certification is claimed, request the scheme name, certificate or licence code, certificate holder, validity and applicable product scope. FSC provides a certification search and states that certificate details are added to its database after certification. Match the company and scope rather than stopping at a logo in an email. [2]
Use a claim-to-document table
Your columns can be: exact claim; cabin component; supplied document; matching product or batch; unanswered question. For “Japanese cedar walls”, seek the written material specification. For a harvest-origin claim, request the relevant origin record. For a certification claim, ask how the certificate and purchase paperwork identify the goods being offered.
Keep the supplier’s wording intact. If the paperwork says “timber” rather than the whole assembled cabin, preserve that distinction. Mark the status as supplied, clarified or outstanding. This simple table is more informative than collecting a folder of certificates without recording which statement each one supports.
Work through an ordinary buying example
Hypothetical example: a buyer has a quotation naming Japanese cedar and a general brochure using the word sustainable. The material field can record the quoted timber, while the sourcing-evidence field stays outstanding. The buyer asks what the environmental wording means and which product-specific documents support it; they neither assume certification nor accuse the supplier of lacking it.
Once the evidence arrives, decide whether it answers your purchase priorities. You may care about documented origin, a particular certification or clear component specifications. Keep those priorities separate from fit, seating and the care routine. This sourcing exercise is not a whole-product environmental ranking or a health comparison between timbers.
Your practical checklist
- List timber components separately.
- Record species, harvest origin and manufacturing origin in different fields.
- Copy each sourcing claim exactly.
- Match certification scope and product paperwork when certification is claimed.
- Keep unanswered evidence requests visible before committing.
Does Japanese cedar mean this timber was harvested in Japan?
Record the timber name and ask separately for documented harvest origin. Do not fill the origin field from the material label alone.
Does this guide establish FSC certification for Swell Cubes?
No. FSC is described only to explain how to examine a claim if one is made. No Swell certification is asserted.
