Outdoor Sauna in Coastal Areas: What You Need to Know

Installing a sauna near the coast is different from installing one in the suburbs.

Salt air. Wind exposure. Higher humidity. Strong sun. These conditions matter.

If you are building a backyard sauna in a coastal area, whether you are in Perth, the Gold Coast, Byron Bay or along the Victorian coastline, you need to choose materials and construction that are built to handle it.

Not all saunas are suitable for coastal environments. Some struggle with corrosion. Some use materials that degrade quickly. Others are not designed for outdoor use at all.

Here is what you need to know before installing an outdoor sauna by the ocean.

How Coastal Conditions Affect Outdoor Saunas

Coastal properties face three main challenges:

Salt air
Moisture and humidity
Sun exposure

Salt in the air can accelerate corrosion in metals and fasteners. High humidity increases moisture exposure to timber. Strong sun can impact lower quality finishes.

If your sauna is not designed for these conditions, you may start seeing issues earlier than expected.

That is why material choice and build quality are critical when installing a sauna near the coast.

Why Timber Selection Matters

The most important component of any outdoor sauna is the timber.

Swell outdoor saunas are built using premium red Canadian cedar. This is not just about aesthetics. Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture, decay and warping. It performs extremely well in humid and coastal conditions.

Cedar contains natural oils that help it resist rot and insect damage. It is also dimensionally stable, meaning it expands and contracts less dramatically than many other timbers when exposed to changing moisture levels.

In a coastal environment, that stability matters.

Cheaper saunas often use lower grade timber or thin panels that can twist, crack or deteriorate faster under coastal exposure.

If you are installing a sauna by the ocean, you want a timber that is proven to last.

Heat Retention and Coastal Wind

One of the biggest concerns with outdoor saunas is heat performance.

When you are close to the coast, wind exposure can be stronger and temperatures can fluctuate more. Your sauna needs to reach proper temperature and retain that heat efficiently.

Many entry level saunas only reach 80°C. That can already feel limited in ideal conditions. In a coastal outdoor setting, that cap becomes even more noticeable.

Swell outdoor saunas reach up to 100°C.

That higher ceiling gives you flexibility. You can comfortably run sessions at 75°C to 90°C, even in cooler or windy conditions, without feeling underpowered.

Combined with proper insulation and the natural heat retention of cedar, temperature consistency is not an issue.

If you are building a sauna outside near the ocean, you need performance headroom. You do not want to be maxing out a heater that is already limited.

Why Traditional Saunas Perform Better Outdoors Than Infrared

When it comes to coastal outdoor installations, traditional saunas are the stronger choice.

Traditional saunas heat the entire air volume of the room using a stone heater. The heat surrounds you. Steam can be introduced. The environment feels immersive and controlled.

Infrared saunas operate differently. They rely on radiant panels and lower air temperatures, typically around 60°C to 65°C.

In a stable indoor environment, infrared may suit some buyers. Outdoors, especially near the coast, they are far less effective.

Because infrared units do not heat the air mass to the same level, wind and ambient temperature changes have a greater impact on perceived warmth.

If you are investing in a serious backyard sauna near the beach, traditional heat is the more reliable system.

Corrosion and Hardware in Coastal Areas

Salt air can accelerate corrosion in exposed metal components.

A well built outdoor sauna will use appropriate hardware and fasteners designed for longevity. This includes high quality screws, hinges and heater components that can withstand coastal exposure.

The heater itself matters.

Swell traditional saunas use trusted Finnish Harvia heaters. These are globally recognised, engineered systems designed for reliability and durability. They are not generic unbranded units.

When installing near the coast, quality components reduce long term maintenance issues and give you peace of mind.
