Planning maintenance for a black-finished outdoor sauna

Plan black-finish maintenance around the coating actually applied, not the colour name alone. The useful starting document is a finish identity card: product, colour, application date, covered surfaces and the instructions supplied by the applicator. Keep it with a set of baseline exterior photographs.

Build the finish identity card

Record whether the finish was supplied with the cabin or applied during installation. Ask for the product’s full name and colour code, the applicator’s details and any preparation information retained from the job. Photograph the original container if one is available.

Mark which parts are coated on a cabin sketch. Include trim and concealed faces only where the applicator confirms they were treated. Keep roof covering, metal hardware and glass separate from the timber-finish record; a black appearance does not make them one maintenance surface.

Inspect each face in a comparable way

The Cube 2 manual calls for monthly exterior inspection for dryness, fading or cracking. Use that as the inspection prompt for that model while following the instructions for the actual finish. Inspection and recoating are separate decisions. [1]

Photograph front, back and both sides in similar lighting, avoiding one image in rain and the comparison image in harsh sun. Add close-ups of patchiness, lifting edges, scratches or exposed areas. Record the orientation and nearby sprinklers, plants or roof runoff so the supplier can understand the location.

Sort the observation before arranging a touch-up

Use four simple labels in your record: colour change; surface deposit; local damage; or finish lifting. These describe what you can see without claiming a cause. Keep several issues separate even if they occupy the same wall, and retain the unedited image beside any annotated copy.

Before recoating, ask whether the existing finish must be cleaned, prepared or removed, which replacement product is compatible and whether a small repair will remain visibly different from the surrounding face. Ask the applicator to define the work area in writing rather than promising an invisible patch.

Example: a lighter band under the roof edge

Suppose a lighter-looking band appears near the top of one wall. Take a wide photograph showing the roof edge and a closer view showing the boundary. Record when it was first noticed and whether the appearance changes after the surface dries.

Send the finish identity card with the images. Ask for a cause assessment and an approved preparation-and-touch-up scope. The first decision is whether this is a cleaning job, a finish repair or an issue requiring inspection, not which black tin looks closest on a shop shelf.

Keep interior care and weather seals out of the paint scope

For Cube 2, the manual says external faces only are to be oiled and specifically excludes interior seating, backrests, heater surrounds and walls. List those exclusions when a contractor works around the doorway. [1]

Also record the condition of nearby joints before the work begins. The Cube 2 manual calls for inspection of external silicone where it splits, lifts, shrinks or pulls away. Report a joint issue separately rather than treating a cosmetic colour refresh as completion of all exterior maintenance. [1]

Your practical checklist

  • Keep product name, colour code and application history together.
  • Photograph each exterior face before arranging work.
  • Ask for preparation, compatibility and work-area details in writing.
  • Separate timber finish, weather joints, metal and interior surfaces.

Should every black sauna be recoated at the same interval?

Base the work on the cabin and finish instructions and the recorded condition. A shared colour is not a shared coating specification.

What if I do not know which finish was used?

Ask the original supplier or applicator for the record before buying a touch-up product. Send the order reference and clear photographs to help identify the job.
