Running a sauna and charging an electric car at home
Coordinate the sauna and car charger before assuming they can run together. Give the electrician equipment facts and give the retailer the intended timing.

Build the equipment brief
Record the exact heater, controller, charger model and configured charging power. Add other substantial household loads and available supply documentation. Include solar, batteries and any existing load-management system. Mark unknowns clearly rather than substituting a familiar rating from another appliance.
For a Cube 2, package selection matters: the seller snapshot lists different heater powers across its packages. A cabin name alone does not complete the load brief. Attach the order specification and the supplied equipment instructions for the electrician to assess. [1]
Separate electrical capacity from tariff cost
The electrician assesses whether the installation supports the proposed arrangement and what compliant coordination is required. The retailer explains time bands and demand terms. A cheap hour does not establish electrical suitability. Energy Safe Victoria directs installation work through registered electrical contractors; do not improvise wiring or switching. [2]
If automatic coordination is proposed, ask who commissions it, how it behaves if communications fail and how the owner recognises normal operation. Request a written description of the permitted arrangement and household responsibilities. These are design questions, not instructions to place an unapproved relay or smart plug on the sauna circuit.
Show the overlap without claiming capacity
Use invented powers of 6 kW for a heater, 7 kW for charging and 2 kW for other loads. Simultaneous operation totals 15 kW. If heating and charging happen separately while that background remains constant, the larger arithmetic total is 9 kW. Neither number certifies the capacity of any home.
Professional assessment must use the actual installation and equipment. Do not convert these totals into breaker or cable selections. Do not assume solar always covers a shortfall or that watching an app replaces required protection or control. The example’s sole purpose is to make the proposed overlap clear on the briefing sheet.
Plan around the next departure
Place the vehicle’s next departure deadline and charge requirement beside the preferred sauna window. Include every powered sauna stage, not just occupied time, and preserve the required pre-start checks. Powered duration is an accounting period; it must not become a recommendation about how long anyone stays inside.
Then check the plan. Time-of-use prices depend on when electricity is imported, and demand rules differ across contracts. A lower simultaneous total does not automatically mean a lower whole bill. [3] [4] Agree a fallback when the car needs urgent charging or the household schedule changes: abandon the preferred sauna slot rather than improvising around the approved arrangement. Keep the final schedule somewhere everyone can see it.
Your practical checklist
- Record configured charger power and exact heater package.
- Give the electrician the complete overlap scenario.
- Check vehicle deadlines against whole powered cycles.
- Assess tariff effects separately from capacity.
Can solar make both loads acceptable?
Do not assume it. Give the solar system details to the electrician and installer; compatibility must not depend on guaranteed sunshine.
Can I coordinate using a smart plug?
Do not improvise switching for a hardwired heater. Any arrangement must be professionally approved and compatible with the supplied instructions.
