Sauna bench surfaces: comfort, finish and maintenance questions

A comfortable bench is more than a timber name. Look at the surfaces your legs, back and hands actually meet, then check the support and the care instructions. Use a contact-area map to record where a surface needs attention instead of treating every mark as a reason to refinish the entire bench.

Map the places you touch

Divide the seating into the main sitting surface, front edge, backrest, step or footrest and hand-contact points. On a photograph, mark any rough area, protruding fixing, residue or sharp edge you can see while the cabin is cool. Avoid running bare skin along a suspected splinter to demonstrate it.

For each point, write down whether it affects ordinary sitting, entering, standing up or cleaning. A wide photograph showing body position can be more useful to the supplier than a close-up with no indication of which board is involved.

Check stability separately from surface feel

The Cube 2 assembly instructions require bench boards to be secure, level and stable, and require the supports, boards and backrest to be secure before use. Keep a separate entry for movement or a fixing that has changed. Surface appearance should not distract from a support concern. [1]

If a board or support is loose or damaged, pause cabin use and ask for assessment. Do not sit or bounce on it to test the limit. Record when movement was first noticed and whether any adjustment or cleaning work happened beforehand.

Choose the care route that belongs to the cabin

The Cube 2 manual says not to oil internal seating or backrests. Use towels on the bench and floor during sessions, remove wet items afterwards and wipe high-use areas once cool. For timber cleaning where needed, it specifies a damp cloth and mild vinegar-water solution; avoid harsh chemicals, pressure washers and steam cleaners. Keep this timber method separate from glass and electrical equipment. [1]

Keep that routine written beside the seating map. If a visitor or contractor suggests a different treatment, check it against the manual before applying it. An exterior oiling appointment should not silently become a bench-oiling appointment.

Example: a rough patch at the front edge

Suppose a small area at the front of the upper bench catches a towel. Photograph the edge, show the whole board and note that it was noticed while removing the towel. Stop using that contact area and ask whether the supplier recommends an inspection, a controlled surface repair or a replacement board.

A useful message is: “This is the upper bench front edge, marked A on the overview. Please confirm the permitted repair and whether it can be done in place.” Do not start sanding to see if the mark disappears before the supplier has enough evidence to assess it.

Make future care easier at handover

Ask which seating components are intended to be removable for cleaning and which are fixed. Keep any component labels or drawings with the maintenance record. Request instructions before moving parts around a heater or lighting installation.

After authorised work, take the same overview and detail photographs. Record the date, replaced part or repaired area and the confirmed care method. The result should be a small, accurate seating history, not a folder of unrelated close-ups that leaves the next owner guessing.

Your practical checklist

  • Map sitting surfaces, edges, backrests and foot-contact areas.
  • Record stability concerns independently of stains or roughness.
  • Use the cabin’s instructions for towels, wiping and finishes.
  • Keep the repair decision and matching before-and-after photographs.

Should I sand every rough-looking patch?

First identify the affected part and ask for the approved response. Preserve the original condition in photographs before any surface repair.

Should Cube 2 benches be oiled?

The supplied Cube 2 manual says not to oil internal seating or backrests. [1]
